Laryngeal paralysis is a condition that affects the muscles of the larynx (or voice box) in dogs. The larynx is responsible for controlling the flow of air into the lungs, and when the muscles that control it become paralyzed, it can make it difficult or impossible for the dog to breathe properly. The condition is most commonly seen in large and giant breeds of dogs, such as the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and Saint Bernard.

The exact cause of laryngeal paralysis is not well understood, but it is believed to be related to a problem with the nerve that controls the muscles of the larynx. Some dogs may be born with the condition, while others may develop it as a result of a traumatic injury, certain diseases (such as degenerative myelopathy), or as a side effect of certain medications.

Symptoms of Laryngeal Paralysis

• Difficulty breathing, particularly when the dog is excited or exerting itself
• Coughing
• Gagging
• Honking noise when breathing

These symptoms can occur gradually or suddenly, and in severe cases, they can be life-threatening.

Treatments for Laryngeal Paralysis

Treatment of laryngeal paralysis usually involves surgery to remove the affected tissue and improve the dog's ability to breathe. In some cases, an alternative treatment such as a tie-back procedure or an implantable electronic laryngeal stimulation devices may be used. With proper treatment, most dogs with laryngeal paralysis can lead normal lives.
